Ford Gravitt was first elected to the office of Mayor in 1970\, taking office in January 1971.\n\nIn January 2017\, Gravitt began his 46th year as the chief elected official of the City of Cumming. Mayor Gravitt also served four years as a City Council member prior to becoming mayor\, bringing his total years of public service to 50. Mayor Gravitt is a multi-generational native of Cumming and Forsyth County\, and a graduate of what was at that time Forsyth County High School (Forsyth Central High today).\n\n\n\nThroughout his many years as mayor\, he has worked hard to bring businesses and higher educational opportunities to residents of the City of Cumming and Forsyth County.\n\nAmong some of his favorite projects in recent years have been: The establishment of a satellite campus of the University of North Georgia\; construction of the Georgia National Guard Regional Readiness Center\; and creation of the Cumming Aquatic Center\, all of which are located on Aquatic Circle off Pilgrim Mill Road.\n\n\n\nOver the past couple of years\, Mayor Gravitt has worked in partnership with the Forsyth County School System to provide a location with utilities infrastructure for the future Alliance Academy of Innovation. This new high school is scheduled to open in 2018 on Lanier 400 Parkway\, which was opened by the City of Cumming in 2016.
